[edit] The Blog

The Social Memory Complex blog started as a way to kick start a electronic music project Weiland was working on with local Richmond musicians. It soon became a solo project, and the blog took on a life of its own independent of the music project (which became Significator instead). Weiland did not title posts at first, and took a much more sarcastic approach to blogging. As time went on and Weiland found more value in his own writing, he began to title posts and give the site a better focus on quality content.

[edit] Topics

The majority of writing on Social Memory Complex is overtly political. From the beginning, the blog illustrates Weiland's path away from mainstream libertarianism towards anarchism and left libertarianism.

There is also commentary on spiritual and metaphysical matters, software development with an emphasis on Ruby and the Rails framework, and general thoughts on current events as well as life events. As a rule, the blog has always been informal, though there are several formal essays featured on the site.

[edit] Flame Wars

Weiland has been involved in internet feuds with RightThinkingGirl in the past. The RTG blog is now defunct, and Weiland is victorious.

[edit] Other Projects

Weiland is a founding member of the Richmond Left Libertarian Alliance, which works with local activist organizations to promote the left libertarian philosophy towards politics, mutual aid, social justice, and policy. He also runs the left libertarian blog aggregator leftlibertarian.org and helps maintain the Attack the System site for Keith Preston, a local political writer. As a member of the Central Virginia Ruby Enthusiasts Group, Weiland also works on local Ruby projects and helps run the organization's monthly meetings. He also recently assisted in the launching of RadicalRichmond.net to help facilitate better communication between Richmond activists.

[edit] The Man

Jeremy Weiland was born in 1979 in King George, VA. He attended King George High School and graduated with a B.S. in German and Computer Science from Mary Washington College. Moving to Richmond in 2005, he has been active in the activist, developer, and music scene. He is married to ceramic artist Tasha McKelvey and they have a beagle.
