Maymont is a popular destination for locals and tourists, families, schoolchildren, and anybody looking for a bit of tranquility within city limits. The park boasts 100 acres of gardens, historical buildings, wildlife exhibits, and many events and shows.

[edit] Historical Exhibits

• Maymont Mansion - Completed in 1893 by James Henry and Sallie May Dooley, the estate stands as a well-preserved specimen from the Gilded Age. The mansion boasts 12,000 square feet and 33 rooms.
• Historical Buildings - Restored early 19th century outbuildings include a Normandy-style carriage house, a 3-story stone barn, a 3-story garage, a water tower, a granite compost house, chicken coop, and gatehouse, a stone mausoleum, and various gates, bridges, and gazebos.
• Carriage Collection - More than 20 carriages and buggies (and related equipment) that reflect the horse-powered transportation typical of Virginia estates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

• Children's Farm - A petting zoo that allows kids up close and personal interaction with various farm animals.
• Wildlife Exhibits - Enclosed habitats featuring bison, elk, deer, foxes, bears, bobcats and many types of birds.
• Nature Center - Aquariums and aquatic exhibits for water-loving creatures including turtles, otters, and fish.

• Italian Garden - Modeled after 15th and 16th century Italian gardens, including fountains, geometrically shaped beds, and sculpture.
• Japanese Garden - A faithfully reproduced "stroll garden" meant to inspire tranquility and reflection.
• Arboretum - Home to native Virginian foliage as well as over 200 exotic species of plants and trees.

• Grotto - Flanked by sleeping lion statues, the Grotto features caves and water features.

• Carriage Rides - 10-minute ride; $3 adults; $2 children
• Tram Rides - $3 adults; $2 children; Members free. The tram makes a continuous loop with stops approximately every 30 minutes at the Children's Farm, Nature & Visitor Center, Japanese Garden, near Maymont House and at the Hampton Street entrance.
• Hay Wagon Rides - $3 adults; $2 children. Begin and end at the Children's Farm.

Patrons wishing to support the Maymont Foundation can make donations to receive discounts, ride tickets, a newsletter, and advance notice of events and programs. Donations are tax deductible and annual membership fees range from $10 for students and seniors to $65 for families and Dooley Society membership.
