Based on yesterday’s Google announcement about supporting microformats, RichmondWiki now includes the hCard microformat standard by default for all articles in the Businesses category that use the Business template.

What does this mean?

The best example is a simple picture:

A Google "Rich Snippet"

A Google "Rich Snippet" (click to expand)

The microformat markup standardizes web content based on predefined semantic structures. This makes it easier for search engines to extract data from a variety of sources because they know it is all formatted the same way.

Their ultimate goal is to include “Rich Snippets” in their search results pages which will include more information about a person, a business, or a product.

Eventually this open data format will help RichmondWiki provide more uniform, useful data to search engines or other applications that can use it.
