Want to upload a structured data set to a wiki quickly?
XML Import
The MediaWiki import XML function allows a user to import a structured XML file to create new pages or add content to a wiki from another wiki. Since the XML file has a pre-determined structure, you can simply convert any existing data table to the proper syntax and import it.
Use Cases
Once in the proper format, RichmondWiki can accept structured data sets for:
- Databases of local people, places, events, businesses, etc.
- Lists of article names that you want to reserve but have yet to be written
- Public data sets, such as those provided by the Census bureau, city government GIS team, or Commonwealth of Virginia
- Any other data table, database, or structured data set that contains local, relevant information
How to Use This Feature
To prevent spam, only wiki admins can use the Import XML feature on our site. If you have a data set that you want included in the wiki, please contact us and we’ll help with structuring the data and importing the files once they are ready.

Have you actually used this to import an xml file that does NOT come from a wiki dump successfully? Any problems, warnings, glitches, detailed how to, etc? Thx.
The XML markup is pretty specific, so you may not be able to import any XML file. If you want to create a new XML file to import, I would start by exporting a MediaWiki XML dump and modifying it. That way you’re sure to get the right syntax and structure.
