Want to contribute to The RichmondWiki Project but don’t know where to begin? This is a good starting point:
Special:Wantedpages
The “Wanted Pages” report automagically lists the pages in a wiki that other contributors are asking for. While editing a wiki, it is possible to link to an article that doesn’t exist yet. These are called “lazy links” and they really are beneficial for helping the wiki grow organically. You’ll notice that they show up as red links in a wiki article.
You Can Help
Any page listed in the Wanted Pages report have at least one “lazy link” pointed to it but no content. Clicking one of these links takes you to a blank edit page for that article. You now have a blank canvas from which to create something useful!
Don’t worry about writing a Pulitzer-worthy masterpiece. Just jot down your thoughts, a few tidbits of info, or even some useful links! Somebody will notice your edits in the Recent Changes report (more on that in a future post) and check out what you’ve edited. Usually a single edit or addition of a new article results in a few follow-up edits, and before you know it we have a new helpful article!
More Special Pages
The MediaWiki software that powers our site has several cool administrative and reporting features called “Special Pages“. These Special Pages offer a glimpse into the inner workings of the wiki and I’ll explore more of them in future posts.
If you want to see info on any particular report or page, leave a comment and I’ll add it to the top of the list of future posts.
