The Tacky Light Tour Google Map for the Tacky Light Tour article was vandalized last night. About half of the markers were deleted and others were moved by somebody with the user name “Ryan R”. The data have been restored and the map is complete again. However, I locked it down so it is no longer publicly editable. I know, that is not consistent with the collaborative wiki environment that we all know and love.
The lesson here is that revision control on a wiki is easy since previous versions of an article can be restored with one click. Other collaborative tools (i.e. shared Google Maps) have no rollback feature so restoring the original data had to be done manually.
On the bright side, the Google Map is apparently wildly popular, surpassing 8,900 views as of this morning. If you would like to edit it, please let me know and I’ll add you as a collaborator. Eventually I want to migrate all of the data to another platform, but I might leave that to the pros at some of the other great tacky lights websites.
