Just in from CNET News, the Stanton Foundation has donated $890,000 to Wikipedia to make it easier for less tech savvy people to edit and create articles. This will help unlock much of the knowledge and information that is currently held by people that are not able or willing to learn wiki text in order to edit an article. The press release is on the wikimediafoundation.org site.
The project will run through 2009, and all resulting improvements will be made available as open source software.
What does this mean for RichmondWiki? For starters, hopefully we’ll be able to incorporate the open source editing tools to encourage more contributions from more Richmonders. By lowering the barriers to entry, we should be able to attract more content and make the site even more useful. Stay tuned for more updates!
